Lac La Ronge Dam upgrade costs expected to reach $2.5 million

A $2.5 million project at the Lac La Ronge Dam is expected to be completed by early September.

That’s according to an email sent to larongeNOW by the Water Security Agency (WSA), which states the ongoing work at the Lac La Ronge Dam is being done in two stages.

The first stage involves structural upgrades, including strengthening the control structure and adding a modern steel structure over the spillway to install and remove stoplogs.

“This work started last summer but was delayed due to the high water,” the email notes. “It is expected to be completed this week.”

Next week, work will begin on seepage remediation on the dam with a grouting program. That work is expected to be completed by early September.

The WSA is currently restricting access to the site during the construction period to eliminate hazards. The agency intends to maintain the water level of Lac La Ronge at the bottom of its range to provide crews with the needed space to complete the project safely and efficiently.

“This project was identified as a priority as part of the 10-Year Rolling Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan—part of WSA’s effort to advance priority maintenance projects for the long-term safety and security of our citizens,” the email states.

In July 2020, the dam’s safety classification was moved from a hazardous condition to a potential dam failure, due to significant rainfall in the area during that month.
