LLRIB cows and plows claim not yet validated

Jun 23, 2021 | 5:13 PM

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is updating members on the Treaty 6 Agricultural Benefits Specific Claim, commonly known as ‘cows and plows.’

According to a LLRIB press release, council has been lobbying the Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations and federal specific claims officials for several years to expedite a decision, but the government has not yet responded to a request to do so. It states there have been no changes since members were last updated about the claim previously.

Earlier this month, each Clearwater River Dene Nation member received a $44,000 payment as part of a $122 million cows and plows settlement.

“The Treaty 6 Agricultural Benefits Specific Claim, known as cows and plows, has not been validated, settled or paid out,” the release from the LLRIB states.

In October 2018, the LLRIB completed historical research and submitted its claim to the federal government. The claims branch has three and a half years before it is obligated to reply on whether or not they accept the claim.

The LLRIB hopes to hear back some time in 2021 regarding the validity of the claim and whether the Crown is prepared to enter into negotiation to settle it. Band members will be updated when there is any progress on the claim.
