Northlands College is establishing an Elders advisory council with the recruitment and application process expected to be announced soon.

That’s according to a public notice released by the college Sept. 10, which states the organization is hopeful the council will reenforce the institution’s vision, missions and outcomes. The council will also serve to provide guidance in respect to the college’s commitment to a shared understanding of the historical, social and economic realities of the people it serves.

“As part of our commitment to reconciliation, today we are honoured to unveil another action that reaffirms that commitment,” CEO Guy Penney is quoted as saying. “I am so very proud of all we have accomplished in the past two years despite living in a pandemic. We have opened the Eli Fluery Cultural Centre and are about to embark on another centre at our Buffalo Narrows Campus.”

The new council is expected to contribute to Indigenous initiatives at the college and their insight will benefit students and staff. It will also deepen understandings of culture, traditions, language and protocols of Indigenous Peoples.

The council will consist of four members and they will represent the Far North, northwest, northeast and central locations.

“In addition, all of our campus locations have had new artwork and cultural items added that are very representative of northern Saskatchewan,” Penney said. “I would like to thank Ron, Elie and our board for their commitment to this endeavour. I would also like to thank all of our instructors, staff and students for their continued commitment to Northlands College.”
