Preventative COVID-19 measures in place at Stony Rapids long-term care unit

Oct 6, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Measures are in place to prevent a potential COVID-19 outbreak at the long-term care unit in Stony Rapids.

The new measures were announced in a memo released Oct. 6 addressed to Athabasca Health Authority (AHA) staff, visitors and community members. The memo notes although the number of active COVID-19 cases is considerably low with six in the AHA region at this time, it is imperative that residents continue to be cautious due to the fourth wave.

Effective immediately, the access door that connects the main AHA health facility and Stony Rapids lobby area is closed till further notice, along with other measures.

“The door between the acute care/medical ward and the AHA long-term care unit is closed till further notice,” the memo states. “Absolutely no non-AHA long-term care staff is allowed to visit the long-term care. Housekeeping staff and staff required to see the long-term care for care purposes may continue to visit the long-term care as needed.”

Only family and friends with evidence of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will be allowed to visit their family in long-term care or the acute care/medical ward unit. Visits will be short with a maximum of two visitors at a time to allow for physical distancing.

All AHA staff and contractors are required be vaccinated and only staff who are fully vaccinated are allowed to provide care in the long-term care unit. All previously shared COVID-19 prevention guidelines are still in effect.

On Oct. 4, health officials with AHA declared a more than 10 week COVID-19 outbreak in Black Lake to be over.
