La Ronge council supports 2022 Family Literacy Day

Dec 17, 2021 | 12:50 PM

At a regular La Ronge council meeting earlier this week, a motion was passed to declare Jan. 27, 2022 as Family Literacy Day.

The request was brough forward by local literacy hub coordinator Amber Daigneault, who told council issuing such a declaration would be a strong, united from for family literacy in the tri-communities.

“The La Ronge and Area Family Literacy Hub is the newest provincially funded family literacy hub in Saskatchewan,” Daigneault said. “Since starting my work in the summer, I have had the privilege to meet and work with several families, community members, professionals, and leaders. Within the capacity of the literacy hub, we have had the opportunity to shape our programming in response to the needs of the tri-communities and the North.”

The theme for Family Literacy Day 2022 is learning to live in the great outdoors. An event will be held at the Early Years Family Resource Centre and La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak, Air Ronge Mayor Julie Baschuk and Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson are expected to join.

In response to the selected theme, the Saskatchewan Literacy Network has selected When the Trees Crackle with Cold: A Cree Calendar Pīsimwasinahikan by Bernice Johnson-Laxdal and Miriam Körner to be read during Leadership Storytime.

“Leadership Storytime will reflect the support of family literacy at the highest level of local government,” Daigneault said. “Children will have the opportunity to view community leaders as reading role models.”
