Layton named Ice Wolves captain

Jan 22, 2024 | 4:33 PM

Ice Wolves defenceman Parker Layton, who is in his third season with the team, has been named captain.

“Parker has done a good job throughout the season, along with the other captains Jacob Cossette, Kyle Graham and Dylan Handel, but Parker has really stepped up his game and I think it’s the first time in history to have a hometown boy wear the ‘C’,” Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “It’s great on him, and this is a team he grew up watching and loved.”

Layton replaces Liam McInnis, who was traded in December to the Nipawin Hawks in exchange for 2004-born forward Hudson Cameron, 2005-born defenceman Brynn MacLean, a second-round pick in 2024 (2008 draft) and a fifth-round pick in 2024 (2008 draft). In the 2023-2024 season, Layton has scored 12 goals and made 20 assists.

Layton, as well as forward Mason Bueckert, have also been chosen to play in the SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Winnipeg at the end of the month.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves are currently in 11th place in the SJHL standings with 13 wins and 26 losses for a total of 29 points. They are only two points behind the Yorkton Terriers, whom they lost against 5-4 in La Ronge on Friday.

“Our focus and preparation wasn’t very good to start the game and that’s where we lost the game, so whether it’s first period, second period, third period or whatever it is, we have to stop having these mental lapses that cost us games,” Kaminski said. “After that, we settled down and played a good solid 45 minutes, but the start of that game cost us a couple points.”

The Ice Wolves also played the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday in Kinistino, where they won 4-3 in a shootout.

“That was good. It was back and forth hockey,” Kaminski said.

“We kind of took over in the second. We were up 3-1 and then our third period wasn’t very good. We got outshot and we made some mental mistakes and they capitalized. They are a division rival and a team we want to catch and you don’t want to give up a point to them, but we were fortunate enough to get the ‘W’ and the two points to move up in the standings.”

The Ice Wolves will once again play the Hawks on Jan. 26 in La Ronge. The game has a 7:30 p.m. start time.
