Sask. takes two of three on final day of SJ/MJ Showcase

The SJHL/MJHL Showcase wrapped up Wednesday night in Winnipeg, with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League winning two of the three games on the second day of action, following a three-game sweep to open the event, Tuesday.

MJHL 20U Black tops SJHL 20U Gold

Waywayseecappo Wolverines forward Sean Williams scored a pair of goals, and MJHL Black outshot SJHL Gold 42-29 on their way to a 4-2 win to open Day 2.

Estevan’s Ilia Chmelevski and Kindersley’s Tylin Hilbig each tallied their second of the event for Team Gold in the loss, as the MJHL led 3-2 at the end of the first, en route to the win.

Melfort’s James Venne stopped 38/42 in the Saskatchewan crease, while Eric Reid of the Virden Oil Capitals made 27 saves on 29 shots at the other end for the win.

Williams was named the MJHL’s Player of the Game, while Chmelevski took the distinction for the SJHL.

SJHL 20U White bests MJHL 20U Red

The second game of the day saw the SJHL’s Team White take home a 7-5 victory over MJHL Red, to finish the Showcase a perfect 2-0.

Seven different players scored for the SJHL in the win, with Flin Flon’s Jacob Vockler, Alexi Sylvestre, Carter Anderson, and Anthony Piccininno each cashing in for a single on the night, as well as Humboldt’s Travis Bryson, Nipawin’s Liam McInnis, and Yorkton’s David Coyle.

Melfort Mustangs’ forward Clay Sleeva was named the SJHL’s Player of the Game with a pair of assists; while Trent Penner of the Winkler Flyers was recognized as MJHL Player of the Game, scoring a goal in the defeat.

SJHL 18U Blue sweeps MJHL 18U White

In the final game of the evening, the SJHL’s 18U Team Blue completed their two-game sweep of the MJHL’s 18U Team White, with a 5-2 win.

Melville’s Jaydon Iyogun, Weyburn’s Cade Meiklejohn, Nipawin’s Finley Radloff, Humboldt’s Ben Costantino, and Kindersley’s Cam Perlinger scored for the SJHL in the victory.

Humboldt’s Aiden Fischer made 32 saves on 34 shots to earn SJHL Player of the Game; while Steinbach’s Connor Paronuzzi was named MJHL Player of the Game, with a power play goal on the night.

Showcase summary

Over the two days of the 2024 joint-league showcase, the SJHL won five of the six games total, outscoring the MJHL 26-18 in the process. The SJHL has now posted a 20-9-0-1 record against their Manitoba counterparts since the event’s inception back in 2018.
