Bueckert wins SJHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player award

Mason Bueckert of the La Ronge Ice Wolves has been named the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Most Sportsmanlike Player.

In 56 regular season games during the 2023-24 regular season, the forward from Saskatoon had 12 penalty minutes and he was only charged with one minor penalty.

He scored 20 goals and 42 assists for a total of 62 points. At the Ice Wolves awards banquet held on Saturday, alongside Parker Layton, he received the award for Most Valuable Player, as well as Best Playmaker, Top Scorer and he received the received the High Watt Memorial Iron Man Award.

“It’s an honour to win an award in a league with so many good players,” said Bueckert in a media release issued Wednesday.

“It was a tough season for the team, but I was glad I was able to contribute offensively. I have very high expectations for myself and the team next year.”

The Ice Wolves finished the 2023-2024 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season in 11th place with 40 loses and 16 wins for 37 points.

They will not advance to the playoffs alongside the Nipawin Hawks, Yorkton Terriers and the Notre Dame Hounds. The top three teams headed into playoffs are the Flin Flon Bombers, Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos.

In addition, La Ronge forward Jacob Cossette is a finalist for the SJHL’s RBC Community Player of the Year award. At the local banquet, Cossette received awards for Most Community-Minded and the High Watt Memorial Iron Man Award.
