Second warmest October for La Ronge

Nov 3, 2025 | 4:21 PM

It was the second warmest October on record for La Ronge, but below-average temperatures are on the way.

The latest data from Environment and Climate Change Canada shows the monthly mean temperature for La Ronge in October was 5.9 C, representing a 3.4 C departure from normal. In addition, it was the warmest October on record for Key Lake with a mean temperature of 3.3 C which is also a 3.4 C departure from normal.

On Oct. 25, La Ronge broke a warm weather record when the temperature hit 18.4 C. Temperature records have been kept in La Ronge for 60 years and in Key Lake for 49 years.

“We were just experiencing an upper-level ridge of high pressure that was bringing in lots of warm air over the Prairies and specifically into almost the entire Province of Saskatchewan,” said Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“That was the predominate upper-level longer term pattern that we saw and that largely contributed to the warm weather that we saw over the course of the month.”

Dry conditions also persisted in La Ronge with it being the sixth driest October out of the last 59 years. There was 13.9 millimeters of precipitation compared to an average of 41.3 mm. It has been drier than normal in the La Ronge area for at least the past 12 months.

“Although there are some chances of snow later this week, it looks like the bulk of the snow is going to track further south,” Desjardins added.

“We’re going to see some flurries later this week, but it does not look like it is going to be a huge amount of snow, unfortunately. It has been quite dry, especially over Northern Saskatchewan over a substantial period of time. It looks like that trend is going to continue for at least the next week or so.”

It will be mainly sunny until clouds begin to roll into La Ronge on Friday. Environment Canada is forecasting below-average temperatures later this week with daytime highs expected to be -5 C on Thursday, -4 C on Friday and -8 C on Saturday.

“For La Ronge, the normal daytime high right now is -1 C with an overnight low of -9 C, so … that pattern shift is going to flip things on the cooler side of normal,” Desjardins said.

She also noted motorists should be cautious while driving as this time of year weather patterns can lead to slippery conditions.
