Youth return from overseas trip in Africa, Europe

Apr 17, 2026 | 4:58 PM

A group of 37 students and 11 adults from the tri-communities have returned from an overseas, three-country tour of Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

“I think our goal is always to open those doors and to see the classroom without walls,” said teacher Connie Haugen, who was a coordinator of the trip.

“Helping them see there is more out there and giving them a goal to some day go back to some of those places. Our trips are kind of like teaser trips to help them see what’s out there. For us, it is a goal to have them see the world and experience something new.”

The trip began April 5 and ended April 16. It started in Barcelona, Spain, before they travelled via bus down to Costa del Sol. They then took a ferry across the ocean to Morocco and spent the day in Tetouan. Finally, they travelled to Lisbon, Portugal.

One of the highlights was visiting the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, which is a famous church in the city that’s been under construction since March 1882. This year also happens to be the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudí, who was the chief architect.

“It was a really good experience for the kids,” Haugen explained.

“Honestly everything was amazing, but that was a highlight and a lot of people really liked seeing the bull ring. We went to an old bull ring in Ronda. They really loved that community. It was gorgeous. Seeing more small communities was kind of nice because when you are in a city, it’s fairly overwhelming.”

Other highlights included a cooking class, witnessing dancers perform, and visiting an aquarium and museum of illusions.

The trip was part of the La Ronge Youth Travel Club and members have been fundraising for a year to make the journey possible.

“We raised just over $52,000 and the money that we raised goes to each student,” Haugen noted.

“Every fundraiser wasn’t necessarily mandatory, they could choose to do it or not if they were available. If they did the fundraiser, then they received an equal portion of whatever we made for that fundraiser. The cost of the trip was about $5,500 each.”

This marked the 18th trip for the club. In 2027, they’ll be travelling to Scotland.
