More snow forecasted through the weekend

A strong, but slow-moving spring storm continues to make its way through Saskatchewan.

“We do still have quite a few alerts in effect,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada scientist Christy Climenhaga.

“Today, that system is still spinning over Saskatchewan and is continuing to weaken. It looks like things will continue for today, before we finally see things ease up towards tomorrow and finally moving out of the region by Sunday.”

The storm has brought with it heavy snow, strong winds and freezing rain to the north central region of the province. So far, there’s been about 30 centimeters of snow in La Ronge and 15 cms in Prince Albert with even higher amounts in localized areas.

“We are expecting more snow to continue today, so keep an eye on those highway conditions, and those watches and warnings in your area before you head out,” Climenhaga stated.

Climenhaga noted it is not unusual to have this kind of spring storm at the end of April as there is still cool air in the north that mixes with the warmer air in the south.

Heading into next week, the temperature is expected to be closer to the seasonal average of 12 C for this time of year. Daytime highs will hover around 8 C and drop to around –3 C at night.

“We’re a good 10 to 15 C below normal and expecting to stay above 10 C or so below normal through the weekend, before we start to see some recovery through next week,” Climenhaga said.
