La Ronge Elks marks 50 years with honourary donation to long-term care

The La Ronge Elks Club marked its 50th anniversary on Wednesday by making an outstanding donation in honour of an original member.

The service club was founded in 1975 with 74 members. While that number has dropped to approximately 35 in recent years, the club continues to have a major impact on the tri-communities and the surrounding area.

For instance, the club has been able to make $40,000 in donations to groups and individuals in the last 12 months.

“I want to say thank you for your commitment to your community. What you do here for your community is amazing. That is something to be proud,” said Saskatchewan Elks Association Immediate Past Provincial President Drew Kenke.

“Nobody does it like the Elks and that sounds like La Ronge right to the tee. You guys do everything full speed, all in, and you guys do a very great job. I want to thank every member for their hard work.”

As a way to mark 50 years, the La Ronge Elks Club members decided to sponsor a $12,000 suite at the new long-term care facility in the name of Ron Fiske. Fiske is an original member of the club, who current members attribute much of their success to.

“One of Ron’s greatest strengths has always been his ability to adapt – welcoming new members, embracing new approaches to the club dynamics, and always keeping our eyes on the mission that has guided us from the beginning: to support where we can and to make our tri-community a better place to grow up and live in,” explained Elks Exulted Ruler Shea Duncan.

Fiske was surprised by the announcement on Wednesday. He noted the club has changed quite a bit since the 1970s, but has never lost its spirit.

“It’s pretty touching, I will tell you that,” Fiske said about the donation in his name.

“I never expected anything like that for sure. We have a good crew in there and that’s what it’s all about. It’s not about me, it’s about these guys here who do all the work.”
