Next Step: Head Coach

Beatty staying on as Ice Wolves GM

Legendary SJHL head coach and general manager Bob Beatty will be staying with the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Beatty, who coached in the SJHL for nearly 20 years, winning three league titles, two of which came in La Ronge, is now the club’s full-time general manager.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for La Ronge, and they treated me extremely well when I was there for nine years prior. We know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it, and we hope to make the Ice Wolves a little more relevant again,” Beatty told LaRongeNOW.

“Obviously, this team has had some ups and downs, and it was great to have some success back in the day. It’s a real fun place to play if you’re having success, just like most places. Recruiting has certainly always been a challenge, but there’s really no trick to it other than making it a fun place to play.”

A La Ronge native, Beatty returned to the organization on an interim basis, back in March when Kevin Kaminski, who was the head coach and GM, took a leave of absence. Kaminski and the team announced they mutually parted ways last month, so the Ice Wolves are now seeking a new bench boss.

“Hiring an experienced coach is going to be a key ingredient to recruiting, and I think there’s a good base that Kevin left behind for the future. We expect to have a competitive team and build on the foundation that’s already established. There are a number of quality applicants who have reached out, so we’re just looking for someone who will help out in the community and build a good rapport with our players,” Beatty added.

“There are countless opportunities for players who come here following their time here, whether it’s continuing in hockey or in other careers. La Ronge is certainly a great place; there’s a lot happening in the North, and the network of people up here that you can build can be extremely helpful. The players who did come out of the program this past year have had opportunities to continue to be hockey players.”

Speaking of former players, Kyle Graham will continue to be the team’s assistant coach, marking his second year as such, while helping out in prior years following his playing days.

Beatty described Graham as an ‘integral part of the team whom he looks forward to having back as an important piece of continuity, hopefully for years to come’.

As for Beatty himself, he has not put a timeline on how long he plans to stay the club’s GM, only that he’s going to ’embrace the challenge and the opportunity to be a part of the Ice Wolves’ organization once again’.
