Mountain bikers gather at Little Red River Park for Pine Needle festival

About 160 mountain bikers are taking part today in the 13th annual Pine Needle Mountain Biking Music Festival at Little Red River Park near Prince Albert.

The festival features a six-hour mountain bike event on a seven-kilometre trail through the park, with solo riders and teams of two, three and four taking turns on the course. Live music from six bands, two food trucks and a kid’s trail run are also part of the day’s activities.

Organizer Mike Horn said the event draws riders from across Saskatchewan, including Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and La Ronge, while also giving local families a chance to spend the day at the park.

“It kind of targets a little bit of everyone,” Horn said. “If you want to just come out and listen to music, you can come out and hang out. There’s no admission, which is great.”

Saskatoon rider Tony Nadon, who is taking part for the fourth year, said the atmosphere keeps competitors coming back.

“It’s just the atmosphere, the fun,” Nadon said. “There is a sense of competitiveness, but it’s more so there’s no time really and we’re just out here having fun and just enjoying what Little Red offers.”

Horn said the festival is held each year on the weekend before Father’s Day and also serves as a fundraiser for Little Red River Park, with proceeds from the event donated back to the park.
