Festivities planned around La Ronge for National Indigenous Peoples Day

Jun 17, 2026 | 4:12 PM

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band will be hosting a number of activities in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday.

There will be activities for the whole family from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the urban reserve in La Ronge. Activities will include a pipe ceremony, massage therapy, antler and wood carving, beading, paddle, and drum, rattle, and birch bark basket making.

In addition, there will be traditional medicines and teas, as well as haircuts, manicures, eyebrow waxing and tinting. Lunch and supper will also be served.

At the nearby downtown beach, a four-on-four co-ed beach volleyball tournament will begin at 10 a.m. There is no entry fee and prizes include $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third.

Starting at noon, there will also be canoe races and tug of war also at the downtown beach. Canoes and lifejackets will be provided and there’s more than $2,000 in prizes to be won in both events.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, Canadians recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. According to the Government of Canada, for generations many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21, or around that time of year, because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
