SMVS celebrates 2026 graduating class

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s (LLRIB) Senator Myles Venne School celebrated its 2026 graduating class on Wednesday.

There were 38 students part of this year’s graduating class, up from 28 in 2025. The ceremony was held at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

There were many dignitaries who attended the event, including LLRIB Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Grand Chief Bobby Cameron, Prince Albert Grand Council Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte, and Cumberland NDP MLA Jordan McPhail.

In his welcoming speech, Senator Principal Dale Ahenakew told the class they have his heartfelt congratulations, and he feels privileged to be part of the journey leading up to them walking across the stage.

“We’re sad to see them go, but at the same time, we’re happy for them because they are going on to bigger and better things,” he said.

“They’re going to go out there and explore and see what the world has to offer and to find their own path in life. We’re happy for them because whatever they choose to do, we know they are going to persevere because they dedicated and persevered and … graduated from SMVS. We know whatever they set their minds to, they’re going to exceed it.”

This year’s valedictorian is Brianna Mirasty. She took the moment to thank family, friends and teachers for helping them reach this important milestone in their lives.

“As we graduate today and prepare for our next steps, I hope we carry with us the lessons, friendships and memories we made here,” she said.

“We’ve made it this far together. Congratulations to the class of 2026.”
