Thousands expected to attend La Ronge Elk’s Fair

Up to 15,000 people are expected to attend the La Ronge Elk’s Fair over the next three days.

The annual midway by Canucks Amusement began noon on Friday and will continue until about 8 p.m. on Sunday. There are 22 rides in total, as well as many games of chance, beer gardens organized by the La Ronge Ice Wolves, a bingo tent, and an array of vendors selling food and various merchandise.

The fair serves as the La Ronge Elks’ major fundraiser of the year and represents the lion’s share of the club’s annual revenue.

“All of the money goes back into the community, whether it is the long-term care facility or donating to people who need a little bit of assistance. It all goes back into the community, which is what we are all about,” explained Elks member Curtis Skalicky.

One notable change compared to previous years is the omission of the talent show. Instead, attendees can look forward to one of Canada’s country music rising stars Travis Dolter. He will have shows starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“For those who were at the fundraiser for the long-term care, he was the entertainment there. He’s a phenomenal guy and it’s a phenomenal band, so people should come and enjoy that,” Skalicky added.

Attendees are also welcome to watch the Terry ‘Babz’ Isbister Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament at the ball diamonds. The tournament has a $7,000 guaranteed cash payout.

Before coming to the fair, Skalicky said there’s a few things people should remember.

“If you want to bring your own food in, go right ahead. If you bring in water or pop, make sure the lids are not broken, otherwise we have a free water filling station here by the Elks cook shack,” he said.

“If you have a clear bag you can bring your stuff in, it makes it a lot easier for people to go through your belongings when you come through the gate.”
