Meanwhile, wind warnings covered Regina and southeastern Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle and Fort Qu’Appelle.

Environment Canada said an “intense low pressure system” will produce westerly wind gusts of up to 100 km/h on Monday, with the high winds continuing until the evening.

“Winds will ease from west to east across the province by early Monday evening,” the weather service noted.

“Local utility outages are possible. Driving conditions will likely be difficult. High-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.”

Environment Canada advised residents in the wind warning area to secure any loose objects so they aren’t blown around, and to keep a close eye on the alerts for any changes.

“This low-pressure system is kind of pivoting over Saskatchewan,” explained Kyle McAulay, an operational meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“The pressure pattern’s going to really tighten up and become really strong for the southern part of the province, so we’re going to see wind gusts of up to 90 km/h, and maybe even a little bit more than that too.”

McAulay said Moose Jaw and Regina will likely see the strongest winds on Monday.

“It’s going to be a pretty windy day, especially this afternoon,” he said.

McAulay said the system is expected to leave the province by the late afternoon or evening on Monday.

“This low-pressure system is going to move off into Manitoba, leaving some drizzly conditions and some leftover cloud,” he said.

“After that, it looks like it’s going to be pretty clear for the next few days.”

Two tornadoes reported on Sunday

The latest warnings follow a very stormy weekend in Saskatchewan.

“There was a significant amount of rainfall that went through the southern part of the province yesterday,” McAulay said.

“It was a big area of showers, with some embedded thunderstorms.”

McAulay said Regina received about 41mm of rain over the past 24 hours, but the highest rainfall total was in Estevan, where 46.8mm of rain fell. There were also reports of golf-ball sized hail in the Estevan area, but he said no significant reports of damage have come in so far.

Saskatoon, meanwhile, saw about 18.5mm of rain over the past day, the meteorologist added.

Two tornadoes were reported in Saskatchewan on Sunday, McAulay said. One report came from the area around Maryfield, while the RCMP reported a tornado in the Kelso area.

McAulay said he hasn’t yet seen any reports of damage caused by the tornadoes. “But that may still change,” he said.

Flooding in Regina prompted police to close the Albert Street at Saskatchewan Drive and Broad Street at Saskatchewan Drive/Dewdney Avenue underpasses. Both routes were reopened at around 5 p.m. on Sunday.
