Cool conditions persist, frost a possibility Sunday morning

Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin are forecast to be around 1 C overnight Saturday into Sunday, while North Battleford and Prince Albert could see the low drop to –1 C.

“The average [first] frost date is September 13th, so we’re right around that time.”

Frost is a definite possibility this weekend, especially in low-lying areas, with cold air dense and heavy, and more likely to flow into the valleys. Lang said it might be time to cover up any plants like tomatoes or cucumbers that are sensitive to cold temperatures.

The cool weather won’t be limited to the evenings, as daytime highs likely won’t be much past the mid-teens until later next week. Lang said a ridge of high pressure from the south will bring warmer conditions at that time, with highs pushing into the 20’s.

Unsettled conditions will continue over the coming days, with stray showers a possibility. Lang said the good news is that there won’t be much accumulation and the showers will be scattered. A system is coming into the province late Sunday, but Lang believes that it will stay further south and won’t affect us up here.

The windy conditions Friday will continue, with gusts at times reaching 60 km/h. According to Lang, the wind will remain strong throughout the evening as well, which will help prevent frost.

“Once the wind dies down, it won’t help for Sunday morning.”
