Ice Wolves lose home opener

Sep 18, 2026 | 11:10 PM

The La Ronge Ice Wolves came up short Friday against last season’s champions.

The team came out with a strong start with Grayden Perozni making the first goal of the game 27 seconds in with assists by Everett Merchant and William Knox. By the end of the first 20 minutes, however, the Flin Flon Bombers were able to tie it up with a goal by Eli Heroux.

While the Ice Wolves were able to take the lead 2-1 with a goal by William Knox (assists by Everett Merchant and Grayden Perozni), the Bombers dominated the rest of the match with a 6-2 win.

“They probably got some familiarity with their structures and their systems and they got some returning players who are really good,” Ice Wolves Coach Taylor Harnett said.

“I know as a coach, you just have a little bit more of an edge and a little bit more confidence for the first little while, but once other teams play well and they’ve got the ability to play well like us, then they start catching up to you. I think Flin Flon has run a good program for a few years. They are the defending champions and they showed they have a good program, but they also showed us at some point we bring our ‘A’ game and we are a little bit more prepared for 60 minutes, we can probably come away with a victory.”

Harnett noted even though the game didn’t end the way they wanted, there were some teachable moments.

“We talked to the group after about that. There were a lot of mistakes we made that we can fix pretty quick,” he added.

“I thought we played somewhat connected, but not as connected as we need to be, but we’ve got a young group. They are hungry, they are happy to be here and they really want to do well for the fans, so I think the group you see today is moving in the right direction.”

The Ice Wolves play again at home on Saturday against the Melfort Mustangs.
