MN-S celebrates tiny home projects in Northern Sask.

Officials with Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN-S) are in the North this week celebrating either the opening or groundbreakings for tiny houses in seven different communities.

The tour began on Monday with stops in Bear Creek, Black Point and Turnor Lake, with additional stops at Michel Village and St. George’s Hill on Tuesday. There are two tiny homes each in Bear Creek, Turnor Lake and St. George’s Hill, and one each in Black Point and Michel Village.

“They were announced last year, and we had the ground-blessings this year,” explained Acting Housing Director Wynter Philip.

“Those kind of just came to completion, and we moved tenants into most of them, and we’re just working on the last couple tenants moving in.”

Each of the homes is under 500 square feet and includes one bedroom and one bathroom.

Officials will also be in Buffalo Narrows and Loche on Wednesday, as well as Cumberland House on Oct. 2 to announce the construction of 12 more tiny homes. They will each be 560 square feet and include one bedroom and one bathroom. In addition, there will be one accessible unit in each of the three communities.

Buffalo Narrows and Cumberland House are both receiving three homes and La Loche is receiving six.

“They will be a little bit different in design. We are working with a different contractor on these ones, so some of the designs and features will be a little different,” Philip noted.

“I should mention this second phase in Buffalo Narrows, La Loche and Cumberland are in partnership with Saskatchewan Housing Corporation under their Rental Development Fund, so they are about a 50 per cent contributor to the project.”

Once those homes are built, MN-S will own 20 tiny homes throughout Northern Saskatchewan.

“These regions and locals did identify there was a need for smaller, single or double occupant homes, mostly for Elders,” Philip added.

“They are very affordable and low income, so most of the citizens we are moving into these homes are Elders on a very fixed income.”
