SaskTel infiNET service expansion to tri-community to cost $7 million

SaskTel will begin construction work this month to bring its infiNET service to the tri-communities.

That’s according to an email from SaskTel to larongeNOW, which states the work will continue through the fall and winter months with an anticipated completion date next spring. The total cost of the project is an estimated $7 million.

“infiNET provides access to SaskTel’s fastest and most reliable internet service, with significantly higher speeds, increased network capacity, and improved reliability,” the email notes.

“Fibre connectivity supports remote work, online learning, streaming, healthcare applications, and business growth while helping ensure the community is equipped to meet future connectivity needs.”

There will be some digging required to install the fibre infrastructure needed to bring infiNET service to the community. The amount of excavation will vary depending on the existing infrastructure in each area.

In locations where SaskTel services are delivered using overhead or aerial facilities, much of the work will involve attaching new fibre cables to existing utility poles, reducing the need for digging. Where underground construction is required, SaskTel and its contractors will work to minimize disruption and restore impacted areas once construction is complete.

“Work will be completed in stages and residents may notice crews working in different areas of the community at different times,” the email states.

“As construction progresses, SaskTel will communicate with affected property owners and customers when specific work is expected to occur in their neighbourhood.”

While existing SaskTel customers will benefit from improved service and the opportunity to migrate from legacy broadband services to fibre, the infiNET expansion will make fibre connectivity available to homes and businesses throughout the community, including those who do not currently subscribe to SaskTel services.
