Council to discuss possible Downtown Patrol Program
La Ronge council could decide on Monday whether a Downtown Patrol Program should be funded to reduce crime in the area.
A document prepared for council by administration states local residents have been concerned about community safety and social issues in La Ronge for a long time.
“There is a strong concern being voiced by the community that there is an increasingly unacceptable level of negative behaviors and conditions, including homelessness, theft, vandalism, aggressive panhandling, and public intoxication or other inappropriate public activities,” the document reads.
“One area of ongoing frustration is the level of policing, which affects the presence and responsiveness of RCMP to concerning ‘nuisance’ behavior in the town’s downtown. With reduced resources, the responsiveness of the RCMP is focused on more significant regional crime and safety concerns.”
