The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) has announced the death of former councullor and respected Pipe Keeper Clifford McKenzie at the age of 64.

A community notice issued Tuesday states McKenzie dedicated much of his life serving the people of the LLRIB. Throughout his career, he was respected as a compassionate leader, mentor, educator and advocate who made a lasting difference in the lives of countless community members.

“At the time of his passing, Clifford was serving as the health clinic supervisor in Grandmother’s Bay, a position he had held since December 2022,” the release notes.

“Over the years, he served the band in many capacities, including guidance counsellor, Adult Basic Education instructor, public works foreman, Prevention and Recovery Services worker, Cree language and cultural instructor, Aboriginal Head Start instructor, and operations manager in Grandmother’s Bay.”

McKenzie served on numerous boards and committees, and he also represented Stanley Mission as a band councillor from 1993 to 1997.

“Clifford was deeply committed to preserving and sharing traditional knowledge,” the release adds.

“He learned to identify and gather traditional medicines and was always willing to use that knowledge to help those in need. His kindness, leadership and friendship touched many lives throughout LLRIB and beyond.”

The wake for McKenzie will be held July 8 at 5 p.m. and the funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. on July 9. Both will occur at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Stanley Mission.
