The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) had an impressive showing at the First Nations Cup golf event hosted last week by George Gordon First Nation at the Moon Lake Golf and Country Club.

The Senior Women’s team – consisting of Rosie Charles, Ann Allen, Joan Sanderson and Natasha Gillert – were able to end the championship in second place with 52 points. That’s only two points behind Onion Lake Cree Nation, which took 1st place out of 16 teams.

In addition, Allen was named Most Valuable Player with 60 points.

“On behalf of my teammates…we were pretty excited, nervous and looked forward to this prestigious event,” Allen said, noting the team was awarded $3,500 in prize money.

“We were honoured to play in the First Nations Cup in the senior’s category. We were able to find our team and over 50-year-olds to play. We were honoured to play for the LLRIB. We all had positive attitudes and wanted to perform and finish strong in the top four, which we achieved.”

Allen explained they were hoping to perform even better, but were only able to play the first nine holes due to strong wind and rainy weather. While she wasn’t surprised they were able to claim second place, she was shocked when she was named MVP.

“It was really nice to hear my name being called again. I was so shocked, but I was also in awe of it all,” she said.

The LLRIB men’s team, which consisted of Dade Bernatchez, Tyriek Morin, Tayven Roberts, Teron Roberts, Keylo Roberts, Gordon Roberts, Dean Roberts and Jamie Charles, placed fourth in the B Championship Flight out of 48 teams.

In total, they earned 336.5 match points. After a slow start, they dominated Day 2 and collected the most points of any team.

Also noteworthy was the Super Seniors team consisting of Eric Bell, Andy Cook, Sam McKay and James Ratt. They won the B Final with 78 points.
