Work begins on new hotel in La Loche

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday in La Loche for a new 59-room hotel.

The project, which is being done in partnership with NexGen Energy, Clearwater River Dene Nation (CRDN) and Métis Local 39, will deliver a much-needed piece of infrastructure in the northern community. It will mark the first hotel for La Loche and the largest hotel in Saskatchewan north of La Ronge and Meadow Lake.

“Great things can happen when people come together and this is such an opportunity, and not just for the community, to have a long-lasting generational impact,” said NexGen Vice President of Regional Development Dylan Smart.

“Great things happen when people come together, share a vision and drive it forward and execute on that vision, and that’s exactly what all of the partners are doing with this piece of infrastructure.”

The hotel, which will be 38,500 square-feet across three floors, will include a conference room, gathering space, restaurant and cultural heritage centre. 3Twenty Modular near Saskatoon will construct the hotel, which is expected to open in July 2027. Once completed, it will create 36 local full-time jobs.

While NexGen is providing the financial backing, the partnership structure will allow CRDN and Métis Local 39 to become full owners and operators.

“At the end of the day as this project comes to fruition, we will be using operational revenue to essentially buy NexGen’s equity portion out,” Smart remarked.

Smart noted the hotel will not only provide accommodation for NexGen employees working in the region, but along with people working with other companies, tourists and other visitors.

“This is an incredibly important milestone for the CRDN, MN-S Local 39, and the entire Northern Saskatchewan region,” said Premier Scott Moe in a media release.

“The partnership to build and operate a new 59-room hotel in La Loche is a strong example of what meaningful, long-term collaboration can achieve. This model puts lasting benefits directly into the hands of the community and reflects the kind of forward-thinking investment that leads to generational impact.”
