Into The Weeds Cannabis

Public consultation process enacted for third cannabis outlet

Into The Weeds Cannabis is once again attempting to open a location in La Ronge.

At a regular meeting on Monday, town council decided to initiate a public consultation process to consider issuing a development permit to establish the discretionary use of a cannabis retail outlet at the current Penny’s Hair Design location along La Ronge Ave.

That’s in contrast to only four months ago when council declined to move forward with a consultation process and instead outright rejected the idea.

In a letter to council, salon owner Penny Schooley stated her property has been for sale for 156 (as of Aug. 12) and Into The Weeds has been the only buyer to make an offer.

“I have accepted an offer to purchase my building from a reputable business person wanting to open a new store location in La Ronge,” she wrote.

“There are no bylaws prohibiting a third business of this kind in the Town of La Ronge and I support their ability to enter a fair, open, competitive market. I don’t believe La Ronge town council should protect the current two operations from a new competitor entering the market and thus prohibit my building from selling.”

Into The Weeds Cannabis is a family-owned business, which operates other cannabis retail locations in Big River, Birch Hills, Creighton, Debden, Langenburg, Melfort, Nipawin, Saskatoon and Spiritwood. Co-owner and CEO Meagan Palidwar-Volaris stated there is room for another cannabis outlet based on their experience entering smaller markets.

“We are one of three stores in Nipawin, which has a lesser population than [in the tri-community area],” she said, noting there are many reasons why they should be allowed to open a new store in La Ronge.

“It represents investment in a downtown commercial property, it supports a local property sale and allows the current owner to move forward with her plans, it contributes property tax revenue and creates local employment opportunities, and we would also be renovating and improving an existing building, which puts an existing commercial property back into active use, and importantly, approving another licensed cannabis retailer does not mean creating more cannabis use in La Ronge.”

With council choosing to move forward with a consultation process, town administration will now prepare and send a notice letter to landowners within 75 meters of the property, place a notification sign on the property until council considers the development permit, and place an advertisement in a newspaper stating the consultation process is moving forward.
