Third cannabis store proposal rejected by council, mayor only voted in favour
La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski was the only member of council to vote in favour of opening a third cannabis retail store in the community.
A motion to do so was defeated at a regular meeting on Monday after councillors Abby Besharah, Viviana Ruiz Arcand, Melissa McNeil, Robert Pacey and Bruce Skilliter all voted against it. Coun. Karli Carr was not present for the meeting and did not vote.
“My position has always been I believe in competition, I believe in being open for business in general in the town,” Hordyski said when outlining his position.
“Marijuana was legalized to basically compete against the black market. It’s one of those things technically, it’s legal if you follow the process, and it doesn’t mean you’re going to get more use of marijuana in the community. I think the people who are using it right now are probably not going to encourage more people to do it; it’s just going to give people that use it a choice of where they want to purchase it from.”
