Team Woodland declared 2019 Tony Cote Summer Games champions
Team Woodland is the overall champions of the 2019 Tony Cote Summer Games.
“We medalled in every single sport,” Team Woodland Coordinator Tami McKenzie said. “Everyone came together and we really worked as a team in every sport. It was just amazing to see such a well-oiled machine.”
Team Woodland was declared the winner with 62 points having edged out Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs with 58 points. Meadow Lake Tribal Council, which includes hosts Flying Dust First Nation, took third with 57 points. McKenzie noted athletes did particularly well in canoeing by winning 15 gold, one silver and three bronze out of all 19 races. Some of the other results include golf (gold, silver, bronze), soccer (four gold), archery (two silver), cycling (silver and bronze), beach volleyball (two bronze), as well as numerous medals in athletics in which the team finished with 560 points.
Overall, McKenzie stated Team Woodland was ready for the Games and paid extra attention to all the athletes. Even though the hosts of the event provided meals to all attendees, Team Woodland also had a tent where food was available throughout the day. McKenzie added another bonus was how Montreal Lake Cree Nation brought along shower units, so athletes didn’t need to stand in long lineups.
