Crosswalk lights in La Ronge to be activated in coming weeks

Crosswalks with activated lights, as well as the new town shop, are expected to be ready for use in the coming weeks.

That’s according to Project Manager Mike Maggrah, who made a presentation at a regular council meeting Wednesday to provide an update on the work. Three out of four of the solar-powered crosswalk enhancements are expected to be done soon at the intersection of Boardman St. and Studer St., the intersection at Hildebrand Dr. and Backlund St. across from the Mel Hegland Uniplex, and one crossing Studer St. to Morley Wilson (Quarry) Park.

“The flasher and blinker sign at Morley Wilson were put in today and the light at Boardman and Studer was put in today,” Maggrah said. “Last week, we went through the components and discovered some light bars are missing. We should have them on Monday.”

The lights at the intersection of Boardman St. and Diefenbaker Cres., however, won’t be installed until some time this spring. Maggrah told council there was an issue with securing the posts due to the exposed bedrock and freezing weather.

The total cost of the project is currently underbudget at about $48,000 spent of the $53,000 earmarked.

New shop nearing completion

Maggrah also expects work at the new $2.3 million town shop to be completed in the next few weeks. The 8,200-square-feet building has six bays and is being built by Pineland Metals from Prince Albert. The interior construction is completed, Magrrah said, while the exterior is nearly completed.

He also noted about 75 per cent of the electrical work is finished with the majority of the mechanical work done as well. Gas lines are currently being connected and cabinets still need to be installed. The new shop is located near the La Ronge Regional Recycling Centre.

“We should have equipment in there in the next couple of weeks,” Maggrah said.
