Kikinahk seeks support for new eight-unit, low-income apartment complex

La Ronge’s Kikinahk Friendship Centre is one of four friendship centres in Saskatchewan that appears to be qualified for a federal housing initiative through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

That’s according to Executive Director Ron Woytowich, who said if given the approval from town council and the CMHC, a new eight-unit apartment block for low-income families could be built along Bedford Drive by Sunrise Apartments. The units would include two bedrooms, be wheelchair accessible, and will take advantage of solar power.

Woytowich appeared at a regular town council meeting Wednesday looking for support for the project. In specific, he asked for approval for a piece of land, as well as a deferral on a 10 per cent down payment.

“In the case of La Ronge, we are always short on adequate housing and proper housing,” Woytowich said. “It’s something we definitely want and need.”

If the apartment block is approved, it will be owned and operated by Kikinahk.

La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak is in support of the project and he noted it seems as though the majority of council members are too. He explained, however, council still needs answers from Kikinahk concerning future servicing to the lot and what the government is willing to pay for.

“We’re happy to work with them to make this project happen if we can,” Ratushniak said. “There’s a lot in the process of this and we’ll do our best.”
