Ice Wolves host 11-hour skate-a-thon

The first 11-hour skate-a-thon hosted by the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday was a great success.

That’s according to assistant coach Kyle Schneider who explained the event, held in Patterson Park, was a lot of fun and that it could possibly be held again in the future.

He noted there was a lot of support by residents of the tri-communities, La Ronge Minor Hockey and the Ice Wolves.

“It was a really cool day,” Schneider said. “We kind of got lucky with some good weather and I appreciate every La Ronge Minor Hockey kid and community member that came out and skated. Some of those kids lasted for six hours, so that was really cool to see. I definitely appreciate everybody who came out.”

The skate-a-thon was inspired by the Northern Lights Movement for Kids initiative that was started by the family of Jacob Leicht, one of the players who passed away in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. Leicht’s parents were able to attend the event on Saturday and participated for a couple of hours.

The skate-a-thon began at 8 a.m. and ended at 7 p.m. The Ice Wolves skated in 30-minute shifts, ensuring there was one player skating for the 11 hours. Leicht’s jersey number was 11.

“This is what myself, Kelly Graham and what the rest of the La Ronge board came up with. With the help of Kelly Graham and the support of the Town of La Ronge, they made sure the ice was good and we were able to pull it off,” Schneider said.

Schneider and Leicht were teammates on the Prince Albert Mintos and they were students together at St. Mary High School. It was Schneider’s idea to host an event in Leicht’s honour and it was supported by the Ice Wolves board.

“Northern Lights Movement for Kids partnered with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League at the start of this season and this was kind of our way getting outside and getting in some physical activity for the youth and just like having a fun day in La Ronge,” he said.

No one with the Northern Lights Movement for Kids was available for comment.
