La Ronge men facing firearm, break-and-enter charges after increased police presence

Charges have been laid in relation to Wednesday’s increased police presence in La Ronge.

RCMP received two separate reports of a home invasion and possible discharge of firearms on the 100 Block of Nikik Road at around 8 p.m.

Police responded immediately and, upon arrival, located three occupants inside the home. Officers then secured the residence to ensure safety was maintained within the vicinity.

An initial and ongoing investigation determined three men forcibly entered the house wearing masks and one of the men was armed with a firearm. The three masked men searched for another male occupant of the house and exchanged gunfire once he was located.

One of the masked men sustained an injury from the exchange of gunfire, while the male occupant of the house fled the scene. The three masked men departed the home in a white Nissan Rogue, which was later located parked at the La Ronge Health Centre. Officers seized a loaded shotgun from the vehicle, but there were no occupants.

Further investigation enabled officers to locate and identify the three masked men.

As a result of investigation to date, officers have arrested and charged 23-year-old Tyrell Dumais and 38-year-old Cody McKenzie, both from La Ronge, with break-and-enter, use a firearm while committing an indictable offence, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a purpose of committing an offence, use of a firearm in committing a robbery, wearing a disguise with intent, and several other firearm charges.

McKenzie was also charged with an additional count of possession of a weapon while prohibited. He was remanded for court and is scheduled to make his first appearance on April 14 in La Ronge.

Dumais was released on an undertaking.

La Ronge RCMP are working to locate the male occupant of the home who was involved in the exchange of gunfire. Officers are requesting anyone with information about this incident to report it to the La Ronge RCMP by calling (306) 425-6730 or their local police of jurisdiction. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
