Ice Wolves host spring recruitment camp

The Ice Wolves had a good showing at their Spring Identification Camp held May 26-28 at the Aberdeen Recreation Complex.

“We had 112. We had about six who at the last minute cancelled,” said head coach Kevin Kaminski.

“One hundred and twenty would have been a full six teams, but we had 112. It was a great showing by the players, and it was a great camp.”

Players came from across Western Canada with a few even travelling to Aberdeen from the United States. Kaminski noted there a definitely some players who attended the camp this weekend who will be on his radar for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) draft on Thursday.

“They really showed their stuff. Their speed and skills and grease and their grit. Everything was good,” Kaminski said.

“The ‘C’ final went to a shootout, the ‘B’ final went to a shootout and the ‘A’ final was 5-4. It was awesome hockey. We had a lot of parents say this was the best camp they have been to in the SJHL. It was very well organized and run. There are a lot of kids who are going to give us tough decisions.”

The Ice Wolves 2022-2023 season ended in March against the Melfort Mustangs during game six of the first round of playoffs. Those who aged out and have left the team were Connor Abric, Trenton Curtis, Ethan Strik and Jerome Walker. Kaminski mentioned there are now 11, 20-year-olds on the team.

“We need to make some moves. That’s just part of the process,” he said.

“There’s going to be some new guys who win some jobs over from the vets from last year. The vets got to do their due diligence and come into camp and make sure they stay on board.”
