A thrilling weekend of hockey came to a close on Sunday night with the Canoe Lake Young Guns winning the 2024 Senator’s Cup

The Young Guns clinched the title with a 4-2 victory over the Sandy Lake Chiefs on Sunday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

Sandy Lake previously beat the Young Guns 3-2 on Sunday evening, forcing Canoe Lake to win its next game to qualify for the final.

Canoe Lake did just that, beating the Red Pheasant Rebels 3-1, setting up a rematch with the Chiefs.

The Young Guns came out strong in the final game, scoring the first goal just five minutes in. They made it 2-0 off the stick of Cody Peterson less than five minutes later.

After no goals in the second period, the Young Guns would get one in the third as Zach Iron picked up a rebound and put it straight into the net for the winning goal early in that frame.

The Chiefs would make it 3-2 thanks to two sensational goals in the third including one from a partial breakaway from Jeremy Boyer.

The Young Guns, though, put in an empty netter with less than a minute left to secure the win and the championship.

Before reaching the final, Canoe Lake put up big wins over English River, Stanley Mission, Patunak, and Pahashna, while Sandy Lake overcame challenges from KeesseeKoose, Norway House, and Red Pheasant.

Meanwhile, the two-time defending champions, the PBCN Stars lost their first game of the tournament on Friday against the Norway House Bruins.

As the tournament was a double elimination format, the Stars were put into the second bracket, where they notched wins against Keeseekoose, Red Earth, and Patunak before falling to the Red Pheasant Rebels on Sunday.

This year’s tournament brought in 19 teams, the most in the event’s history.
