One of four people involved in a violent robbery, that left the victim with a gunshot wound to the back, has received a four year prison sentence.

Jaron Halkett, 24, appeared at La Ronge Provincial Court on Thursday and a guilty plea was entered to a sole charge of robbery with violence. The sentence represented a joint submission by the Crown and Defence and the victim’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

The incident occurred March 17 in Bells Point. Court heard Halkett, along with three others, plotted to rob the victim after he was invited to a residence on the reserve. During the ordeal, the victim was shot in the head and the back.

A manhunt ensued and Halkett was arrested the following day. He told the court he was sorry for his role in the attack and that he didn’t expect things to go the way it did.

In addition to the four-year sentence, which he was credited 100 days for time already spent in custody, Halkett was given a 10-year firearms ban and he must submit a DNA sample.

In a victim impact statement, the victim’s father, who did not want to give a comment to larongeNOW following the sentence out of fear for reprisal, said his family has been devastated by the attack. He noted his son will be affected by it for the rest of his life.

Court heard Halkett was willing to cooperate with the police investigation. Following the sentencing, Judge Nathan Forester told Halkett he hopes the incident will be a turning point in his life.

The publication ban on the victim’s identity was deemed necessary as the co-accused still have their charges before the courts.
