LLRIB opens overnight homeless shelter

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is stepping up to offer an overnight homeless shelter during the winter months at a location at Morin’s Hill.

“If we don’t step up, who is going to do it,” said Coun. Ann Ratt.

“Winter is going to come, the snow is going to fly soon, and they need a place to go.”

The LLRIB is offering the essential service following the closure of Scattered Site Outreach Program at the end of June.

It was run by the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, which operated a facility in downtown La Ronge for many years. At the time, management cited too much opposition towards its location and the services being provided as the reason for its closure.

The new location will offer up to 30 spots for clients on a first come, first serve basis. Ratt explained so far the program has averaged eight clients per night since it opened about a week ago.

“We do have security,” she added.

“We’re open until 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and security will watch that they are not sneaking in alcohol or doing drugs or smoking. It will be run similar to Scattered Site.”

In addition to the shelter space, the band is also offering clients breakfast and a light lunch.
