NAR secures La Ronge animal control contract

Apr 26, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A six-month, $15,000 contract was signed Wednesday between the Town of La Ronge and the Northern Animal Rescue Humane Society (NAR) for local animal control.

Permission was granted at a regular meeting of Town Council to create a contract allowing NAR to take over the responsibility of collecting and impounding stray animals in La Ronge. While details of the contract still need to be finalized, Mayor Ron Woytowich said if the six-month trial runs smoothly, NAR will likely be asked to do the job year-round for approximately $30,000.

“The people involved in NAR, they’re really passionate about this,” he said. “It’s a win-win for both, and because they’re also doing the Village of Air Ronge and they also go on-reserve, it’s just going more to this tri-community way of doing things.”

The decision was welcomed by NAR chairperson Genevieve Candelora, who said she was happy and excited to learn the contract will be confirmed. She noted the model of funding is similar to those being used by animal rescues in other communities and it will increase the responsibilities of the organization. Once the funds are handed over the group, Candelora stated NAR will be hiring an employee to assist them.

Candelora said animals collected in La Ronge will be given priority at the pound, while other NAR animals will be housed there as a last resort. She noted the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Air Ronge currently pay NAR a fee for every animal they take once they’ve gone uncollected at their own pounds. Those animals, Candelora said, are usually housed with volunteers at foster homes.

“We’ve been trying to move animals out of the pound really quickly,” she said. “Down the road we hope to acquire a bigger facility and one that would meet our needs a little bit more.”

In the next couple of years, Candelora said the public can expect NAR to begin fundraising to move into a large building. She said it would be nice to see the current arrangements transform into a regional animal control system, which would help the organization meet that goal.
