La Ronge cannabis permit goes to B.C. retailer

The mayor of La Ronge is disappointed in the provincial government’s decision to hand the town’s cannabis retail permit to a British Columbia-based retailer.

“I do know at least three residents from La Ronge had applied and… I was hoping it would have been someone from the community who gets it,” Ron Woytowich said. “The people who I knew were all experienced at business.”

From the 27 applicants who were in the running for La Ronge’s permit, Andrew Gordon of Aura Cannabis in Vancouver was ultimately successful. The company was also given one of seven permits to operate in Saskatoon. According to the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), two-thirds of the 51 permits holders are either from the province or conduct business here already.

The successful applicants now have 45 days to begin the permitting process and, as a condition of the permit, must be operating within 12 months of legalization. Cannabis retail stores also need to be standalone operations selling cannabis, cannabis accessories and ancillary items as defined by the SLGA. Locations will also be subjected to local municipal zoning bylaws.
