Full water and sewer services coming to 96 LLRIB houses

Jun 6, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The first phase of a project to provide full water and sewer services to 96 Lac La Ronge Indian Band houses should be completed by the end of the year.

Residents of Kitaski Reserve 156B, which consists of Big Rocks, Jack Pine, Morin’s Hill, 101 and the area near the band office between La Ronge and Air Ronge, currently use water and septic tanks to meet their needs. But, by the end of 2018, director of public works and housing Tayven Roberts said 46 houses should be completely hooked up.

“We’re going to do our best to keep the community notified of disruptions, because there is going to be blasting and road blocks,” he said. “There’s a lot of bedrock in this area, so there will be a lot of blasting.”

The first phase of the project includes the installation of a sewer force main along Highway 2 between Far Reserve and Kathy’s Korner, a sewage pump station being built in 101, decommissioning of used water and sewer tanks, and connect the new services into homes. Roberts noted the force main should be completed by the end of June, while the rest of the work will be done in the following months. The first phase is estimated to cost $6.3 million.

The second phase of the project, which Roberts noted is similar in size and scope, includes the installation of a second main and sewage pump, as well as decommissioning and connecting the new services. Roberts added residents in those areas can also expect extensive digging this summer.

“The bedrock is what held this project back for years,” he said. “It’s cost prohibitive since it’s so expensive to blast and put services into bedrock laden areas, but we finally got some funding to do it.”
