Advanced care paramedics joining La Ronge EMS

Jul 9, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Better outcomes for patient care is expected with the addition of advanced care paramedics (ACP) to the staff at La Ronge EMS.

That’s according to Operations Manager Corey Ecarnot, who said staff at the location worked hard with the La Ronge Health Centre to enhanced the practice from basic life support to advanced life support services. Ecarnot said there are plans to hire four ACP to compliment the current team of 30 primary and intermediate paramedics. So far, one ACP joined La Ronge EMS.

“It’s like them bringing the emergency department to the scene of the call, and they can provide a much higher level of care for those patients who are critical, sick or injured,” Ecarnot said. “It’s an exciting time because we’ve never had it in our service area.”

Ecarnot went on to say an ACP is able to do much more than other types of paramedics can. He said they can provide advanced patient assessments, cardiac rhythm interpretation, drug therapy, pain and advanced airway management, as well as provide 30 more kinds of medications. An ACP can also better respond to heart attack victims and other critical situations.

La Ronge EMS operates a ground fleet of ambulances, but also assist with provincial medevac services. Ecarnot said the ambulances travel farther north than Southend to the former Halfway House along Highway 2 and west toward Pinehouse Lake and Hall Lake. The location staffs medivac flights, which cover far north communities like Wollaston Lake, La Loche and Île-à-la-Crosse. In total, Ecarnot noted La Ronge EMS responds to 300 to 330 call per month.

“This lets us work with our local hospital to keep our registered nurses and physicians in the community, instead of having to send them on transfers because they have to provide the higher level care,” he said.
