La Ronge Council spent $60,000 repairing four-plex for doctors

La Ronge Council spent just over $60,000 repairing a four-plex owned by the municipality and rented to doctors who come to town to work.

According to acting-administrator Robbie Bender, earlier this spring water infiltrated one of the basement bedrooms and, after some of the walls were removed to be repaired, it was discovered the exterior foundation walls also needed to be fixed. Jor Co of La Ronge was ultimately contracted to do the work, which has since been completed.

“It was time to fix it because it’s worth around $400,000 and we didn’t want to let it go to waste,” Mayor Ron Woytowich said. “I think we expected to spend $100,000 to do everything that was required to meet the new code because it’s an older building.”

Woytowich noted the town built the four-plex many years ago in order to provide good housing conditions to healthcare professionals like doctors coming to the community. During his time as the chairperson of the Mamawetan Churchill River Health Authority, Woytowich heard about how well the building was serving it’s purpose and how appreciative doctors were to have it. He said La Ronge Council believes the four-plex is still serving its purpose, which is why they decided to fix it.
