La Ronge mayor concerned allegations could hamper search for administrator

The deadline to apply for the job of chief administrative officer (CAO) in La Ronge and other positions was extended by two weeks.

Town council made the decision to extend the window because only one person applied for the position of CAO and another person applied to become deputy-CAO. Both positions have been advertised since Sept. 26 and were supposed to close Friday, but the new deadline is Nov. 1. According to La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich, he’s concerned allegations of homophobia and racism by former administrator Stephen Conway could affect the number and quality of people who apply.

“It was like shooting hollered ducks and it makes the whole community look bad,” Woytowich said of the allegations. “Someone may have said something wrong once, but even if you said something wrong once, it’s not good enough and shouldn’t happen.”

Woytowich went on to say how important it is to find someone who is experienced to be the new administrator. He noted La Ronge is a complex town compared to other places, adding there are service agreements in place between the tri-community and how the municipality also owns an airport. Citing council’s general lack of experience in municipal matters, Woytowich said they learned the hard way as they search for a fourth CAO in two years.
