LLRIB hosting community safety meetings

Dec 14, 2018 | 4:00 PM

In an effort to create safer communities, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) has hosted a series of meetings to come up with a plan to do so.

“It’s a chance for community members to be heard,” LLRIB Director of Education Simon Bird said. “A lot of people don’t know what happening in our communities. People would rather go on Facebook and start blasting everybody. They don’t choose to find out what’s available.”

For the 30 or so local residents who attended a meeting held Dec. 11 in La Ronge, Bird noted they were broken up into groups and visited about 10 stations asking for feedback on certain topics. There’s also been other meetings already held in Hall Lake and Sucker River with plans to hold more in Grandmother’s Bay and Stanley Mission when they’re invited.

Bird said the top safety priorities coming out of the communities so far include youth programming, a lack of parenting, not enough security, lighting at night, community involvement and the lack of RCMP. Community involvement was one area people were really concerned about and Bird mentioned everybody needs to find ways to attend more meetings and events. For example, one issue discussed at the gathering this week was in regards to the band’s problem in retaining security officers.

“We can only provide so much support for our communities,” Bird said. “Those jobs aren’t a first choice of career for many people because of the level of training we have, pay and the high turnover.”

Bird also wanted people to know about a youth conference happening in La Ronge between Jan. 3 to 5. The band invited Order of Canada member and former NHL hockey player Fred Sasakamoose to join the event. Bird added the conference will be a chance for young people to share ideas and also meet Sasakamoose, who overcame many hurdles in life to achieve the success he has.
