SARM President expects ‘lively discussion’ at convention

Delegates attending this week’s Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) convention in Saskatoon are hoping for more details on some big issues affecting the province.

SARM president Ray Orb said the federal carbon tax ranks high among concerns that are top of mind.

“That will affect people’s budgets, especially farmers. I know that farmers, if they haven’t already, are going to be purchasing inputs to put their crops in. So they’re going to have to take into consideration, you know, ‘we’ve got another tax to pay.’”

He said many are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the provincial government’s court challenge against the tax.

Federal International Trade Minister Jim Carr will address the convention Thursday.

Along with updates on pipelines and environmental regulations, Orb said delegates will want to hear what’s being done to ensure market access for Canadian canola in light of China’s recent move to cancel shipments from Richardson International.

“I think we’re going to have some lively discussions at our conference.”

Premier Scott Moe will address delegates on Wednesday.
