Cook-Searson presses Ottawa for action on Timber Bay survivors, Indian Act changes
Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson is calling on the federal government to take action on longstanding First Nations issues, including justice for Timber Bay Children’s Home survivors and proposed changes to the Indian Act.
Cook-Searson represented northern Saskatchewan at a historic meeting in Ottawa on Monday, Oct. 26, bringing together nearly 200 First Nations chiefs and leaders with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and other provincial and territorial leaders.
Following the meeting, Cook-Searson said Saskatchewan’s provincial government has indicated it is willing to work toward a settlement for survivors of Timber Bay Children’s Home, but federal involvement is still needed.
“I’ve been advocating along with other leaders since 2006,” said Cook-Searson, who has served as chief since 2005.
