Métis citizens invited to Cameco CNSC application discussion
Métis Nation-Saskatchewan is hosting a lunch on Saturday for Métis citizens to discuss the Cameco application to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for a 20-year renewal of permits at the Rabbit Lake, Key Lake, and McArthur River operating sites.
According to Cameco, the company applied to the CNSC to begin the process to renew the Key Lake and McArthur River licences in April, 2021. An indefinite licence for the remaining life of each operation was initially requested, but concerns led Cameco to submit a revised application requesting a 20-year licence term on Nov. 4.
“In support of the licence renewal process, Cameco conducted early and proactive engagement with Indigenous communities located in the vicinity of Key Lake and McArthur River in accordance with Cameco’s Public Information Programs and Collaboration Agreements,” a statement on Cameco’s website reads.
“During our engagement activities, representatives from some of these communities expressed uncertainty with what an indefinite licence term means and how it fits within existing regulatory and engagement frameworks.”
