Ice Wolves surpass 2023-2024 season record

The La Ronge Ice Wolves recently surpassed their record from the 2023-2024 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season.

The Ice Wolves currently have 40 points, representing 26 losses and 18 wins in 44 games. That’s ahead of the 37 points they earned last season.

The team is currently sitting at ninth place in the league with the Estevan Bruins trailing them with 34 points. The Notre Dame Hounds and Nipawin Hawks sit in 11th and 12th place, respectively, with 26 points.

“That’s great, but right now it’s not good enough,” Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said about passing last season’s record.

“We have blown leads going into the third period in three of our last five games. We squandered some wins and points away, which we needed and it’s crunch time now. We need to get on a little roll, and I think in a couple weeks, we have Kindersley who we are trying to catch. We need to probably get some help from other teams against them and we need to start controlling our own destiny and start getting wins and gaining some ground on them.”

As for securing a playoff spot, Kaminski explained nothing is guaranteed.

“We have to get hungry, we have to get desperate and we got to play with confidence,” he said.

“If we’re up going into the third period, we have to make sure we play with that lead and not sit back.”

The Ice Wolves host the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday before they head out on the road for five games. There are 11 regular season games left this season with only four remaining at home.

The Mustangs are currently the top team in the league with 74 points.

“We have to take care of business here Saturday,” Kaminski noted.

“Our road record is way better than our home record this year, which is kind of interesting. We seem to play a more simpler game on the road and try not to do too much. We get more results on the road.”
