Development permit requested for new pot shop

A third cannabis outlet could soon open along La Ronge Avenue.

The Town of La Ronge has received a development permit application to establish a cannabis dispensary at the current location of Penny’s Hair Design and FiliBeans.

“The applicant’s proposed use as a cannabis retail outlet would require the existing two commercial uses at this location to be discontinued,” a report from administration states.

“The property owner is selling its two adjacent lots and has entered into a conditional sales agreement with the applicant who proposes to utilize the properties to accommodate the cannabis retail outlet in the existing building.”

Administration is recommending that the public notification and consultation process be initiated. That would include requesting feedback from nearby property owners and preparing an on-site notification poster.

If the application is successful, the building will be the future site of Into The Weeds Cannabis. There are existing stores in Melfort, Birch Hills, Spiritwood, Langenburg, Big River, Debden, Creighton, Saskatoon and Nipawin.

“As a family business, we have a lengthy history in retail sales across pharmacy, grocery, liquor, and now retail cannabis,” an information sheet from co-owners Meagan Palidwar-Volaris and Jenna Palidwar notes.

“Our roots in La Ronge are both past and present: our business partner and father was a previous partner in the Harbour Pharmacy and is the current owner of the Red Apple building.”

Town council will decide whether or not to initiate the public consultation process to consider issuing a development permit at their next regular meeting on April 27.
