Hall Lake teen headed to badminton provincials

A Grade 10 student from Hall Lake’s Sally Ross School is headed to badminton provincials this weekend.

Johnny Halkett, 15, has had quite the season for himself already having placed first earlier this year at districts in La Ronge and regionals in Humboldt. He also competed in a club badminton provincial tournament in Regina, where he earned gold.

The 2026 Saskatchewan High Schools Athletics Association Provincial Badminton Championships will be held at Saskatoon’s Walter Murray Collegiate on Saturday.

“He is definitely developing into a great athlete,” said his coach Neil Murdock.

“We have older players who will come and play him and that helps Johnny quite a bit. It’s just a higher level of badminton they play when they are practicing and playing games.”

Murdock has been coaching Halkett was several years now and they resumed practicing last fall. They practice four days per week.

“Usually, we will try hit the four corners like corners in front of the net, the back and even in the middle, but mostly front of the net and the back of the court at the double lines,” Murdock explained.

“We want to be able to hit those areas, so we have a good idea where the shots are going to be when he’s competing. We do a lot of drills to get those shots right.”

Halkett is excited to compete in provincials this weekend. Badminton is one of his favourite sports since many of his family members played it while he was growing up.

With a successful season behind him already, Halkett thinks he has what it takes to place in the top three.

“I think I have a decent chance,” he said.
